Development News

We are pleased to share the plans for the Country Park's new café and water sports centre and look forward to opening the doors in summer 2022.

Development image June 2021The centre will provide indoor and outdoor seating where visitors can enjoy food, refreshments and glorious views of Ocean Lake all year round. It will also incorporate toilets and watersports changing rooms. The design is energy efficient and includes a range of features to protect the environment including solar panels, high levels of insulation and a water source heat pump to warm the building.

The building works have now commenced (4 January) - the project is being managed by Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council. Once completed the building will be operated by tmactive.

We will keep you up to date with the development as it progresses on this page and our social sites.

Following the piling work on 26 January, today we saw the building rise out of the ground.  All the steel work is now completed and you can get a good idea of what the visitor centre is going to look like.  The next stage will see brick and blockwork added.

Foundation Piling - Wednesday 26 January

Today there is some major work taking place at the Country Park as the contractors start on the foundation of our new building.

They are installing piles - these are used in situations where the top layer of soil is weak and unable to hold the weight of the building.

Press release from Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council - 2 November 2021

Award winning park transfers to leisure trust

Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council has signed an agreement for its leisure partner organisation, tmactive, to take on day-to-day management and operation of Leybourne Lakes Country Park.

The 12-year lease adds to the range of leisure facilities managed on behalf of the council by tmactive. Other facilities include Larkfield Leisure Centre, the Angel Centre, Tonbridge Swimming Pool and Poult Wood Golf Course.

tmactive has an impressive track record in improving services at leisure facilities throughout the borough and will use its experience to benefit the 160,000 visitors a year who use the park. One of the first projects to get underway will be the opening of a water sports centre and café overlooking the Ocean Lake.

The new facility, due to be competed by summer 2022, will provide an all-weather venue for visitors to relax with refreshments and enjoy views across the lake. It will also be built with the environment and energy efficiency in mind, incorporating solar panels and a water source heat pump. The budget for the build is around £880,000, with 90 per cent coming from developer contributions paid to the council.

Cllr Des Keers, the council’s cabinet member for community services, said: ‘Leybourne Lakes is a hugely important community asset and I’m delighted that we’ve been able to add it to the range of services managed by tmactive. I’m looking forward to seeing the trust’s expertise deliver many improvements in the years ahead, not least the opening of the lakeside facility which will be welcomed by cyclists, walkers and water sports enthusiasts.’

Martin Guyton, Chief executive of the Leisure Trust, said: ‘The trust is delighted to take on Leybourne Lakes and is committed to maintaining and improving the Country Park for the wide range of residents and visitors who access the Park on a daily basis. Outdoor activity is of vital importance to the physical and mental health and wellbeing of everyone and we aim to enhance services to ensure this benefit to all visitors.

Press release from tmactive - October 2021

Fishing at Leybourne Lakes from November

tmactive is proud to announce that it will be taking over the management and operation of Leybourne Lakes Country Park on behalf of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council. This builds on the very successful partnership operating since 2013 managing the leisure facilities in the Borough.

As part of the plans to enhance the overall management of the park, tmactive has reviewed the current arrangements for managing the fishing rights and following evaluation of submissions from interested parties is delighted to announce its new partner, SWS Fisheries. A new long term licence has been awarded to SWS which commenced on 1 November 2021.

SWS is using the period from 1-15 November to make improvements to the existing provision and ensure all health and safety arrangements are in place before inviting anglers back. New anglers have the opportunity to purchase a ticket in early November after the priority period offered to existing anglers. Visit their website for full details.

We believe that SWS Fisheries will rejuvenate the Larkfield Complex and plans for re-stocking the lakes will be shared with anglers. We look forward to working closely with SWS to enhance the customer experience and we welcome new and existing anglers to the Larkfield Complex.
