Get Set for Sport Relief 2020!

Here come the Girls is all about being active whilst having fun. This year for Sport Relief we decided to do our bit of good by taking part in a 5k fun run/walk to raise money for Sport Relief.

During this week, all five of our running groups have been taking part to raise as much money as we can. We look forward to sharing how much we have raised at the end of the week!

Time to Talk Day 2020

Time to Talk Day encourages everyone to be more open about mental health – to talk, to listen, to change lives. Talking about mental health doesn’t have to be awkward. 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year.  Why not arrange a cuppa and chat with a friend and talk about how you are both feeling? Send a message to friend to see how they are? Or encourage your work colleagues to get involved and talk about mental health. This year, ‘Time to Change’ are using the popular game 'Would you rather?' to help break the ice and get the conversation flowing.

Run & Talk with 'Here Come the Girls'

This week has all been about supporting #runandtalk. A fantastic initiative that helps to promote mental wellbeing and breaks down the stigma around mental health.  tmactive’s ‘Here Come the Girls’ running group is all getting women active in a social, supportive environment, that focuses on both physical and mental wellbeing. Running, the fresh air and the support from other women helps to boost confidence and self-esteem, gives local women the opportunity to meet new friends and leaves you feeling more energised, focused and happy. This is what makes ‘Here Come the Girls’ so great. We are a community. We walk, we jog, we chat, we laugh. In a way the running part is secondary. This week was our biggest ever turnout and we also welcomed lots of new joiners. Walkers, 0-5k joggers, 5k runners and a coffee and a chat in the café afterwards (our favourite part). Quoted from one our brilliant volunteer run leaders Amanda- “Some of you tried something different and maybe just a little out of your comfort zone today, and you were all totally amazing”.

'Chat & Chill' for teens

tmactive has recently started working with Cognitive Behavioural Therapist Jacqueline Bell to deliver free monthly Chat and Chill sessions for teens. Chat and Chill provides young people with a safe and free service to talk about how they are feeling. The session is a chance for teens to open-up about various issues affecting their lives and helps to create more realistic, appropriate thoughts and behaviours. We should all feel comfortable talking about our mental health. The session is free of charge and hot chocolate and biscuits will be provided. The next sessions is Wednesday 19th February, 7-8pm at Prima Stage School ante room at Larkfield Leisure Centre. For more information please email natalie.smith@tmactive.co.uk.

Activity sessions to support Men

Men often have greater difficulty talking about their own struggles. tmactive want to raise awareness and help tackle the issues of men’s health. Please do get in touch if you would like to voice your view on what you feel men want and need in the Borough of Tonbridge and Malling. We are very keen to develop activity sessions that support men’s physical and mental wellbeing. Talking saves lives and physical activity brings people together and has so many health benefits.  Please email natalie.smith@tmactive.co.uk.

tmactive proud to sponsor Larkfield Ladies Football Club

tmactive is pleased to announce a new partnership with Larkfield Ladies Football Club (LLFC), marking the latest in a series of moves to improve tmactive’s engagement with sporting groups in the local community to encourage more people to achieve their recommended 150 minutes of exercise per week through socially-driven sporting activity.

LLFC 10 01 19 21

The club has received new tmactive-sponsored kit, and the partnership is geared towards generating more opportunities for local people to get active outdoors on a local level. One focus is to engage more women in physical activity, with the LLFC representing an excellent example of this.

LLFC Chairman/Manager Russell Jeffery was pleased with the sponsorship, saying: “We thank tmactive for their sponsorship in what is an exciting fourth season for the team.  We look forward to working with tmactive, specifically by supporting and running activities for their tmactive150 programme.”

Martin Guyton, Chief Executive of tmactive, said: “We are delighted to sponsor the team and are looking forward to working with them in the year ahead. The Larkfield Ladies FC is a great example of people getting together to get active in their community.” He hopes to get the ladies team involved in physical exercise at Larkfield Leisure Centre, as the team aims to improve their fitness for the coming season.

The ladies football team is part of Larkfield FC, an FA charter standard community club established in 1976. The club runs both men and women’s football for a wide range of ages, including vet’s teams and multiple children’s teams for both genders. For more information, visit their website here.

sports and leisure 300x170 copyCelebrating recognition at Kent Dementia Action Alliance award finals

Following a long-running scheme to improve our centres and services for users living with dementia, we were very proud to place among the finalists for the Dementia Friendly Sports and Leisure Award from the Kent Dementia Action Alliance earlier this year. Speaking prior to the award ceremony, our Health and Wellbeing Coordinator Suzy Abbott stated that “we are extremely pleased to be nominated for an award that recognises the work we have been doing to help people living with dementia become or stay active.”

A successful test run of a dementia friendly multi-sport session at the Angel Centre in Tonbridge led to the permanent implementation of the session on a fortnightly basis, which has been received with significant approval by local attendees living with dementia. Not long after this, Tonbridge Swimming Pool set up a specific hour-long swim session on Fridays from 12.15-1.15pm, designed specifically to cater for those living with dementia, providing a trained on-site ‘Dementia Friend’ who can guide swimmers ahead of their session.

Poult Wood Golf Centre offers dementia friendly golf mornings and all of our sites are undergoing assessments to help us view the facilities from the perspective of people living with dementia, so that we might make the necessary adjustments to make the user experience as inclusive as possible. Our objective is to make the recommend 150 minutes of exercise per week an achievable goal for those living with long-term health conditions, such as dementia.

The Dementia Action Alliance is a partnership of over 150 organisations from across England who work together to share ideas and best practice when it comes to managing dementia. Formed in 2010, they strive to make the world a better place for individuals with the condition, including the leisure industry. Further information about the Kent branch of the Alliance can be found here.

If you would like more information on our dementia friendly sessions, please email suzy.abbott@tmactive.co.uk. We’d love to see you there.

Here Come the Girls!

run1With 2019 approaching, why wait until your new year’s resolutions to get fit? Running, jogging and even brisk walking are proven to have a significant impact on your health and fitness, say the NHS, reducing the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and more. In addition, running improves cardiovascular fitness and is believed to hold benefits for mental health too, particularly when running as part of a group.

With that in mind, we’d like to invite you to check out your local running groups! Here in Larkfield and Tonbridge, inspired by the new This Girl Can movement, a group of ladies looking to get fit have formed the Here Come The Girls running group. The group is beginner-friendly, for women of all ages, even including mums with strollers, with a strong focus on engaging women in improving their physical fitness and breaking out of inactivity.

The social aspects of running can be extremely valuable, engaging the brain as well as the body to make you feel good. Here Come The Girls are a friendly, welcoming group, getting involved with campaigns such as Sport Relief and setting up seasonal runs, such as their upcoming Christmas run.

The group organises regular runs starting at our tmactive sites, Larkfield Leisure Centre and Tonbridge Swimming Pool, which take them out into the parks and streets for low-intensity but highly beneficial exercise. Joining is free! You can check out the group’s Facebook page for regular updates here.

28thJantmactive150 Challenge 2017

Three months ago, four local women were selected to take part in a FREE life-changing programme of exercise and nutrition at the Angel Centre, Tonbridge.

In the past 12 weeks there has been laughter, sweat and dread; hard work, an amazing amount of dedication and without a doubt, new friendships made.

Sunday 28 January was the official graduation of the 'tmactive150 Challenge', with our fabulous four taking part in a two hour non-stop 'Moveathon' event of Dance, Zumba and Pilates/Yoga fusion.

On behalf of myself and the team at tmactive, we are incredibly proud of Sarah, Karina, Rebecca and Alex and their achievements.

These women have made huge strides in improving their health and fitness and we hope this journey has inspired others to make a commitment to being healthier and more active. #thisgirlcan

sarah copySarah "Wow, what a 12 weeks! I can honestly say this has been life changing for me. It has been hard going but having the girls there has been a huge support. I may not have achieved the weight loss I want yet (determined to get there but medication is battling against me!) but I do however feel fitter and stronger both mentally and physically which is fantastic as that was my main objective for doing the tmactive150 Challenge!!

After being accepted onto the tmactive150 Challenge I was so nervous as I found myself in hospital again just before I started and this really knocked my confidence which to be honest was already quite low as I had been frightened to exercise for so many years after being so poorly. If I had tried to do this alone, I am not sure I would have persevered but knowing that Karina, Alex and Rebecca were all there as well kept me going as we are all rooting for each other to succeed in our own goals!

I have tried many different classes and some tough PT sessions and surprised myself as to what I have enjoyed! I have so much more energy now, which with a chronic illness is quite unbelievable, and have recently enjoyed a weekend at Center Parcs with my 3 year old niece which was non-stop. A year ago that would not have been possible as I would have been an observer on the sidelines. So I’d like to say thanks to tmactive for giving me that little bit of the old me back and a glimmer that this is only the beginning of starting to get my life back on track. The tmactive150 Challenge has also enabled me to be bold and have confidence to sign up for the Orbit Abseil in support of The Pituitary Foundation in July! I will be scaling the dizzying heights for a charity that has been a lifeline to me throughout my illness to date and I am so pleased that I finally feel fit enough to give something back and raise awareness of pituitary conditions and the help & support available!"

Sarah is raising awareness for The Pituitary Foundation and Pituitary conditions. Follow Sarah's NEW BLOG HERE!

1karina copyKarina "I have really enjoyed the tmactive150 Challenge, it is nice for something to get me out the house and every one at the Angel Centre is so friendly. I always do aerobics and have started doing the Legs, Bums & Tums class. I started to do really well and loose inches of my body but it started to get hard to sticking with the healthy eating at this time of year. I have put the inches and weight back on if not more. However, it has definitely made my body stronger and heart healthier from when I first started. I am going to carry on doing the classes and gym when the challenge is finished. I have also brought my own fitness dvds; weights and kettlebell, so that I can start doing more exercise at home."

1rebeccaRebecca "I really appreciate all of the support I have had with getting back to a healthier lifestyle and have made some changes that I hope will stay with me in the long run. I have completely changed the way I think about food, especially at the weekends and when eating out, and have been making sure I hit my 10,000 steps most days. Thank you for even giving me the opportunity to be a part of it."

Alex "I really have enjoyed the tmactive150 Challenge, especially the 1:1 sessions with Brad and the group sessions with the other lovely women. When I started the 1alexChallenge, I was full of cold and feeling run down. However, I was determined to give it my best shot.  I felt my body getting stronger and felt more confident. I really liked the boxing with Brad, laughing all of the way through Zumba with the women and growling all of the way through Circuits. Unfortunately, I was struck down by a nasty bout of lady flu in December, so I was gutted to be out of the gym and this knocked my fitness back a little. Very frustrating when your body is too poorly to work out. Overall, it has been a fantastic experience and I am grateful for being part of the tmactive150 Challenge. It has certainly re-ignited my passion for doing exercise and now my fitness is a top priority for 2018 and beyond."

tmactive150 Challenge 2017

Web Res CAS8163 copy

Following the success of the tmactive150 Challenge 16', we are extremely excited to be running the Challenge again in 2017.

This year we are working with four local women who were selected for their keen interest and motivation to make positive changes to their lifestyles. Over the next three months Rebecca, Karina, Alex and Sarah will take part in a guided programme that offers both exercise and nutrition advice to help them meet their fitness goals. The majority of the activity will take place at the tmactive leisure facilities in Tonbridge, as well as activities that form part of the tmactive150 programme that run in and around the centres.

This blog will outline their journey through the three month period, with the hope to inspire others to value physical activity and the positive effects it can have on our health and wellbeing. #ThisGirlCan #ThereIsOnlyOneYou

Week 1

It has been a really positive start from all four challenge entrants.  Each have shown a desire and willingness to be pushed and try new things.  I am looking forward to continuing to help them over the upcoming weeks with their journey of living a healthier lifestyle. Bradley Watson, Angel Centre Health & Fitness Manager

Here's what our Fabulous Four had to say...

Rebecca "I found the induction really inspiring, all I want to do now is get stuck into it all and start seeing a difference! Everyone at tmactive has been so friendly and helpful and the other girls on the Challenge are great.”

Karina “I was shocked but also over the moon to hear I was 1 of the final 4. I lack so much confidence and don't think I could have tried changing my life without this amazing opportunity. I was very nervous to be starting this programme but also very excited at the same time. My induction with Bradley wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I actually enjoyed it and once I had finished I couldn't wait to get started and ended up in the gym the very next day!”

Alex “I felt really excited to be chosen and super ready to take on the challenge!”

Sarah “Having been blindsided two years ago with a rare and chronic pituitary condition my life changed beyond recognition. When I saw tmactive were searching for 4 women for a 12 week challenge I decided to take the plunge and apply. I was absolutely delighted and overwhelmed to have made the final four! The first session was incredibly nerve wracking as I have not set foot in a gym in so long and am incredibly self-conscious. I need not have worried though as the team put you at ease straight away and now I can't wait to get cracking. For me it's an amazing opportunity to be able to improve my health and get back into exercise within a safe environment with expert advice!
