Mental Health Awareness Week 2021

Mental & Physical Health has never been more important


shutterstock 470802149Hosted by the Mental Health Foundation, Mental Health Awareness Week will take place from 10-16 May 2021.

The theme this year is 'Nature'. 

Nature can do wonders for our mental health. There are so many powerful psychological and emotional health benefits to spending time viewing scenes of nature. From the calming enjoyment of listening to singing birds, the spark of happiness from looking at flowers; woodland wildlife, the slow crashing and peaceful, swelling sounds of the sea; and family walks and bike rides. Being in nature has evidently shown to reduce stress and anger, improve our self-esteem and confidence, increase happiness and improved mood and boost relaxation. Exposure to nature can also contribute to our physical wellbeing, by reducing blood pressure, heart rate and muscle tension. 
At tmactive we are very passionate about mental wellness and physical and social wellbeing. We want to help support Mental Health Awareness Week and provide inspirational and supportive resources for the people of our communities.

Each day is an opportunity to give some physical activity and self-care a try and explore nature around us.

Wellbeing Walks

kentWalking keeps our bodies and minds healthy. The healing power of nature helps to give us a breather from the stresses of daily life and the space to gather our thoughts. A good walk can do wonders for our mental and physical wellbeing and this is why we are looking to develop a programme of free, wellbeing walks, in Tonbridge & Malling.

Our wellbeing walks are an opportunity for people to get some exercise and talk. Whether that is to meet new friends or to talk about problems, our walks will focus on physical, social and mental wellness and enjoying the beautiful nature that surrounds us.

Explore Kent has all you need to know about your local area to help you enjoy some daily exercise. From woodland walks, to secret hilltop hideaways, rambling trails, Gruffalo discoveries and family bicycle routes- there are so many places close to home to discover. So grab your favourite jumper, wellies or walking boots, keep safe and get exploring!



Teen Spirit

shutterstock 1141197377Introducing tmactive150’s NEW outdoor exercise group for teens aged 13- 16 years.

Teen Spirit is about creating a social environment to support young people’s wellbeing. When you feel good physically, it’s much easier to feel good mentally.
When you have people supporting you who are here for the same reason, it's an environment that makes you feel better about yourself and helps you gain confidence. Outdoor activity has also proven to help reduce exam stress.

Teen Spirit offers an introduction to jogging and outdoor exercise in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, with a qualified Level 3 Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor, Run Leader and Mental Health Awareness Champion.

Start Date: Thursday 13th May 2021 (8-week course)
Course dates: 13 May, 20 May, 27 May, 10 June, 17 June, 24 June, 01 July, 08 July.
Time: 4.45pm to 5.30pm
Course Cost:  FREE session on the 13th May. £21 for remaining dates (£3 per session). Members and casual users welcome.  
Location: Meeting outside at Tonbridge Swimming Pool (The instructor will be there to meet participants).

Mental Health Benefits of Swimming Outside

10686403 TGC Swimming SH02 186 CMYK 300dpiSwimming can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, reduce stress and help you unwind. It's just you and the water.

The enjoyment of swimming outside with birds singing, your daily dose of vitamin D and the beauty of nature can do wonders for improving our mental health. 

We are working with our community partners; including MIND and One You, to provide those who may be struggling with their mental health the opportunity to try swimming outside and experience the positive health benefits. 

We have two sessions available on Wednesday 12th May ay 11.45am and 12.45 to give outdoor swimming a try at a concession price.

Here Come the Girls running groups are a fantastic way to get fit, run/walk with friends, socialise and have fun! Our inclusive ladies only sessions are FREE, friendly, supportive and beginners are very welcome. #thisgirlcan

Our run leaders are very passionate about both the physical and mental health benefits of physical activity and the positive social benefits it brings. All our participants agree that being outside and around nature is wonderful for our wellbeing. 

Our Sessions:

  • Mondays 9.30am @Tonbridge Swimming Pool
  • Tuesdays 9.30am @ Larkfield Leisure Centre
  • Wednesday 9.30am @ Tonbridge Swimming Pool
  • Wednesday 7.30pm (new beginners programme) and 8pm (intermediate) @ Larkfield Leisure Centre
  • Thursday 6.30pm @ Larkfield Leisure Centre

primaDance & Music

When you move, you feel good and there is something about dancing, singing and uplifting music that helps to improve our mood, reduce stress and make us feel more positive. 

There is also no reason why you cannot put on some music and have a boogie with your family, partner, virtually with friends or even just yourself at home :)

For children and teens, movement to music can really help to express feelings and emotions. In addition, dance classes also lend themselves to an increase in social bonds and friendships and overall mental wellbeing.


We would like to share with you why the students of Prima Stage School at Larkfield Leisure Centre like to dance, sing and act.

jacTechniques that can help with Anxiety, Depression, Panic & Stress

Before lockdown, we were incredibly fortunate to work with Neuro Therapist Jacqueline Bell, to provide 'Chat and Chill' sessions at Larkfield Leisure Centre. These sessions were a chance for teens to open up about various issues affecting their lives and to help create more realistic, appropriate thoughts and behaviours.

Jacqueline has kindly provided us with video links to support anyone, of all ages with techniques to manage anxiety, depression, panic and stress.

tmactive150 is our community programme, designed to encourage and help local people achieve 150 minutes of moderate activity per week.

tmactive150 is all about giving local people the opportunity to enjoy and participate in accessible and affordable physical activity. Most importantly, these activities give people a sense of belonging and understanding of the physical, mental and social health benefits that physical activity can bring.
